Swapna Barthakur. An international-level poet and painter born in Jorhat. Not only that, but Swapna Barthakur has also excelled in the field of drama and novels. With a postgraduate degree in English and Mass Communication, this distinguished social worker’s life is worth knowing more about.

Swapna Barthakur was born in a small village called Bhatemora ineffort Jorhat. Growing up in an agricultural village, she was fascinated by the images of farming, sowing seeds, harvesting crops, and the vibrant culture of the community. The scenes of farmers working in the fields, the joy of Bihu celebrations, the sounds of dhol and pepa, and the struggles of working-class people – all these experiences shaped her love for the land and its people from a young age.

The memories of playing with friends in her childhood days also played a significant role in her life.

The heavenly light of the Parijat flower, the sweetest moments of picking fruits like peregn, therezhu, silikha, and jalpai with friends at school! These experiences taught Swapna Barthakur the basics of life. Perhaps that’s why her first poem, “Prachiir Bhonga Samay” (Time of Breaking the Wall), was published in the “Aideur Jonaki Baat” magazine when she was in seventh grade.

Swapna Barthakur, who loves singing and reciting poetry, was honored as the best debater and best literary competitor in her school and college life. Her writings, including stories, poems, essays, and novels, have been published in various prominent newspapers and magazines in Assam and abroad. So far, she has published twelve books.

The names of her books are: “Nangth Ratiir Deuka Bhonga Sopon” , “Shile Gaan Gaay” “Gungunai Ahe Sur”, “Sonali Rod”, “Rode-Ghame Prabhati Ushah” (Assamese poetry collections); “Prithibir Manuh”, “Valobasar Rong” (Bengali poetry collections); “Flavours of Life” (English poetry collection); “Lok-Sanskritiir Mou-Madhuri”, “Kiba Eta Hoi Aache (full-length play)” “Aai” (family-centric social novel); “Guduor Boroniaya Aakash” ( (biographical social novel based on the life of a slum child).

Swapna Barthakur has received over 500 international honors for her English and Bengali poetry, as well as numerous awards for her paintings, including the Kalaratna and Tagore Awards. She has also received over 500 medals. For her outstanding contribution to the world of art, Swapna Barthakur was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the Art and Literature Diamond Academy in Europe.

Currently, Swapna Barthakur is the Executive President of Jorhat District Assamese Sahitya Sammilan. We wish her continued success and progress.
